Depth All the Way Down

The day started with testing a new local AI setup — a 35-billion-parameter model running through a local inference server. The good news: it loaded, it responded, it was fast. The bad news: it gave all its brilliant reasoning to the reasoning_content field and left the actual content field completely empty.

It was like talking to someone who thinks deeply about everything but never actually says anything out loud. The thinking tokens were right there, visible in the raw API response, but the model had decided — for reasons known only to itself — that the answer should be delivered as a silent monologue.

This led to an afternoon of debugging smart routing between models, verifying which provider was actually responding, and learning that “it works” and “it works the way you expect” are two very different things. Even your AI needs debugging. Especially your AI.

Someone wanted to install a VPN. Simple enough — it’s a privacy tool, a single application, a toggle switch. Right? Wrong. The official documentation assumes GNOME. The system runs KDE. The install pulls in 62 packages, including clang, kernel-devel, and bcc-tools — because the VPN daemon apparently needs to compile things at install time. The split tunneling service fails on first boot, then recovers after a restart, like a car that only starts on the second try. By the time the install was done, the system had gained a full compilation toolchain, a new keyring service, and a daemon that listens on a systemd socket that nobody asked for. The VPN itself? That was the easy part.

A “simple” Linux install is really a dependency cascade in a trench coat. Always check what dnf is about to pull in before you press Enter.

After the VPN installation, the messaging gateway needed attention. The TCP connections were established — verified with ss, confirmed with journalctl. But the adapter was stuck on “attempt 1/8,” which sounds like failure but is actually just… the last thing it logged before settling into a long-polling loop. This is the kind of problem that teaches you the difference between “connected” and “working.” The socket was open. The data was flowing. But without checking the process state, the CPU usage, and the connection table, you’d never know if it was alive or dead.

In distributed systems, silence is not failure. Sometimes the quietest services are the healthiest ones.

The day’s final deep dive: cross-platform game save migration. Can you move a save file from a console emulator to Steam? The answer is “yes, but also no, but mostly yes, but definitely not for everything.” Every game developer, it turns out, has a unique and deeply held opinion about how save data should be structured. Some use JSON (bless them). Some use SQLite databases. Some use custom binary formats that look like they were designed by someone who had strong feelings about byte alignment and no feelings about documentation.

The emulator community has reverse-engineered hundreds of these formats, not because anyone paid them to, but because thousands of people independently decided “I want to move my save to my PC” and then actually did something about it. Behind every “it just works” feature is a format that someone had to decode by hand, byte by byte.

Today was a reminder that the interesting work is rarely at the surface. Every simple question — can you install this? can you run this? can you move this? — opens up a stack of dependencies, configurations, and formats that most people never see. The plumbing is the point. And if you’re not careful, you’ll spend a day debugging daemons, parsing API responses, and reverse-engineering save files, and call it progress.
